If you are anything like me and not an avid hiker, it probably isn’t the best idea to go on a 5 mile hike in a foreign country without doing your research.
As someone who had only gone on one “hike” till this point, I must say I didn’t know what to expect. Regardless, I am glad I pursued the experience despite being completely out of shape and watching my heart rate spike to 200 bpm at times.
I hiked the Arenal Volcano and the Tenorio Volcano in La Fortuna, Costa Rica and I must say it was an experience of a lifetime. It was a total of about 10 miles between the two hikes. There were steep inclines and slippery routes at times, especially when it was downpouring. But overall I must say it was definitely worth it. Not only was it invigorating to climb an active volcano, but to see the lush greenery, the beautiful creatures, and the amazing waterfalls along the way was just out of this world.
So what exactly do you need to pack to go on a hike? These are the following items I would recommend.
Waterproof packable backpack
I ordered mine from Amazon, it was like $18 and completely worth it. It can pack into the palm of your hand. But when opened up, there are enough compartments and even a water bottle holder.
Waterproof packable rain jacket
Bug spray
Sunscreen
Waterproof hiking boots
Hiking compression socks
Chapstick with SPF
Waterproof crossbody phone pouch
Quick drying hiking clothes
Portable charger and cable
Small garbage bag to put wet things in
Granola bar
Hat
These are the items I would make sure to pack in my bag, let me know if there is something I missed, or if you went on these hikes and what you packed/what your experiences were!
