Burnout is a phenomenon that has not been talked about as much as it should have been until quite recently. As someone in the medical field who will be providing care to individuals in the future, I realized over time that if I cannot take care of myself, I will not be able to take care of others.
Burnout is REAL. It is scary. It can get emotionally taxing, and draining. It can lead to anxiety, depression, and suicidality. It is important that we continue to talk about burnout, it’s causes, and healthy ways to address it. Dealing with burn out is a life long journey, a work in progress, it’s not a quick fix. It is the pattern of developing healthy habits and a healthy mindset over a period of time that will give you the skills to prevent and treat burnout. Below are some steps to help you become aware and heal from burnout.
Create Awareness
The first step to fixing a problem is identifying it. You clicking on this article is part of that process. Take a moment to evaluate the toll your body has taken recently. The following questions may be a good place to start if you are stuck.
Do you feel content in life?
Are you happy?
Are there parts of your body that you feel tension or strain, like your upper back, lower back, shoulders?
How has your appetite been?
When is the last time you did something for yourself?
Retreat and Reset
Establish Healthy Boundaries
Do Things that Make You Happy
Prioritize your Mental Health
